This year we will be performing Mozart Great Mass in C Minor and Mozart Requiem - Peters Edition of both works
For OxfordOrpheus 2018 we shall be performing two great unfinished masterpieces by Mozart, the Mass in C minor, originally intended as a grand celebratory mass for Mozart’s wedding to Constanze Weber, and the Requiem which, given the mysterious circumstances in which it was commissioned and the composer’s mental state and rapidly declining health, he came to regard as his own memorial. After his death the work was completed by his pupil Franz Süssmayer; the Mass remains a magnificent torso seemingly complete in itself but lacking some of the liturgical movements. Both works present a great challenge for the choir and the soloists but we know this will be met by Oxford Orpheus members who have persistently requested the Mass in C minor as one of the works they would most like to perform.
Following the highly enjoyable and successful choral workshop which took place on Saturday 11 November, the concert will be held on Saturday February 17 in the Town Hall, Oxford. Please note that we will use Peters Edition for both works. Please could you also note: For the Requiem there is only one Peters edition. For the Mass in C Minor, you will need to make sure that you use the Peters edition marked UrText which is numbered Nr. 8706 and is KV427 (417a). You can obtain the music from Blackwell’s, or on-line from Choral Line using the discount code ORPHEUS.
Audience tickets will be available from January 1, 2018
How to get involved.
You can get involved by becoming a member of Oxford Orpheus for the 2017/18 season by choosing to participate in the workshop, the concert or both.
Concessionary membership fees are offered for the over-60s and for students.
When you make your selections from the menu below and press the “Register” button you will be asked to complete an online form. This will include questions about your singing voice and about your previous experience of the Mass in C Minor.
Membership registrations have been very strong during the past few weeks. As a result we do now need to start managing applications, and in particular to ensure that there will be an appropriate balance between singing voices at the Concert. From now on no new registrations for Altos or Sopranos will be accepted on-line. If you are an Alto or Soprano who has not yet registered for the Concert, please get yourself onto the wait-list by emailing Leo at email@example.com
The Mass in C Minor is scored for double choir. It is therefore important to know who already knows either the Choir 1 part or the Choir 2 part for your voice. Please therefore indicate on the booking form if you are already familiar with a particular part. If you aren’t, please choose the “not sung before” option, so we can allocate people accordingly to ensure a balance between the two choirs – very important! We shall let you know at least three weeks before the event (workshop or concert) which part you have been allocated so as to enable you to take a look at that part if you wish. Thank you for your co-operation!
