This season we are performing:
Fauré – Requiem
Parry – I was glad
Vaughan Williams – Five Mystical Songs
The Workshop took place on Saturday 24th November 2018 in the Wesley Memorial Church. Robert Dean, with his extraordinary energy and exceptional coaching skills, raised us all (particularly sopranos – top b-flat and all) to stratospheric heights. The works we are performing are all, in different ways, intensely moving and I think everyone felt that we have a very special concert ahead of us, especially when we are joined by our two thrilling soloists, Sir Thomas Allen and James Newby.
The Concert will be held on Saturday 2nd February 2019 in the Town Hall, St. Aldates, Oxford. For information about the logistics of the Workshop or Concert days, click on the relevant tab on the left of this page.
We are delighted that Sir Thomas Allen, our patron, will be our Concert-day soloist in the Fauré Requiem.
The entire programme will be an expression of Entente Cordiale – the two other well-loved pieces being from the core English repertoire.
Our baritone soloist in Vaughan Williams’ Five Mystical Songs will be rising star James Newby, one of BBC Radio 3’s New Generation Young Artists for 2018/20, who has been generously mentored in this work by Sir Thomas. We are thrilled that they will be sharing the platform.
The concert will begin with the stirring coronation anthem – Parry’s I Was Glad.
We look forward to singing with you or seeing you all again in our 2018/19 season.
How to get involved.
You can get involved by becoming a member of Oxford Orpheus for the 2018/19 season – choosing to participate in the workshop, the concert or both. Concessionary membership fees are offered for the over-60s and for students. See below for the membership registration process.
You can also be involved by joining us as a member of the Concert audience on 2nd February 2019! You can buy tickets by going to the box at the bottom of this page.
Please make your selections from the menu below; then press the “Register” button. You will be transferred to the Eventbrite website to make payment and to complete an online registration form. This will include questions about your singing voice and about your previous experience of Parry’s ‘I was glad’ which is scored for double choir. Are you are already familiar with either the Choir 1 part or the Choir 2 part for your voice? (if you aren’t, please choose the “not sung before” option). We can then allocate people to ensure a balance between the two choirs – very important! We shall let you know at least three weeks before the event (workshop or concert) which part you have been allocated so as to enable you to take a look at that part if you wish. Thank you for your co-operation!
